The Artists: EAK

DEBORAH JONES "If… we regard Nature as the collection of phenomena external to man, people only discover in her what they bring to her. She has no suggestions of her own. Wordsworth went to the lakes, but he was never a lake poet. He found in stones the sermons he had already hidden there." Oscar Wilde, The Decay of LyingI work in urban, semi-urban, rural and 'natural' outdoor settings, using events and activities to provoke conversations and exchanges with people about our relationships with public or shared locations. I like to find out about how we find and make connections with the place we're in - the geographical, earth/stone/pavement sort of place and the temporal, social place that goes with it. As well as noticing and drawing out the divergent perceptions coexisting in and of a place, I re-invent ways to represent that landscape with participants in sensible and nonsensical ways. My desire and curiosity are strongest when it comes to finding ways of having conversations at all - whether it is possible to do it; how to do it with mutual respect and sensitivity; how to be generative and inventive about it, rather than instructive or reductive. Trained as a sculptor, nowadays I work with props and performance, photography, film and sound recordings. |
